Android's new sideloading rules are officially here

Google has implemented new developer verification rules for Android. These affect app installations in several countries.

Google has officially started enforcing new developer verification rules for Android as of September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. These regulations require that apps from participating stores come from verified developers before they can be installed on certified Android devices. While it is still possible to sideload unregistered apps through Google's new advanced flow, this process intentionally adds more friction.

Why it matters

These new rules from Google represent a significant shift in Android's philosophy of allowing users the freedom to install apps from any source. While this freedom is not being outright eliminated, controls are being introduced that could impact user experience and app availability in certain markets.

What we know

The changes affect devices running Android 7 or newer and have started in four selected countries. Users in these regions will need to adapt to the new developer verification requirements to install apps from unofficial sources.

What's still unclear

It remains unconfirmed whether these new rules will expand to other countries or how they will affect the diversity of apps available on the Android platform in the long run. There is also a lack of clarity on how unverified developers will adapt to these changes.
