Google Ads Delivering Tech Support Scam Freezing Devices

Recently, researchers have alerted users to a tech support scam that spreads through Google ads. This fraud is particularly insidious as it can freeze the screens of both Windows and Mac devices, displaying alarming messages that urge users to call a fake support center. These ads have appeared on high-traffic sites, including maps, weather, real estate, and sports.

## What we know The security firm Netskope has been monitoring this activity and reported that between August 31 and September 14, 619 customer organizations clicked on these malicious ads. Fortunately, Netskope blocked the content, preventing users from being scammed. Approximately 62% of the affected organizations were located in the U.S., followed by Japan and Australia.

## What remains unclear While these ads have been observed and their content blocked, the full extent of the scam across the web remains unknown, as does the number of users who may have fallen victim without Netskope's intervention.
