Russian bot activity drops 84% after Yandex attack

Russian bot activity saw a dramatic drop following an attack in Ukraine, but rebounded quickly.
Recent reports indicate that Russian bot activity experienced a significant decline, with a staggering 83.6% drop in suspected posts after an attack on Yandex's data centers in Sasovo. This incident, which took place on October 8, led to a massive decrease in the volume of messages from accounts flagged for inauthentic behavior, according to Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD).
However, this decline was short-lived. By October 10, just two days after the attack, bot activity had already surpassed pre-attack levels. While there was a smaller dip of 42.6% following the shutdown of Yandex's infrastructure, the bots quickly regained their operational strength, highlighting the resilience of these disinformation campaigns.
Interestingly, this pattern was not observed in Western political communities, where Cloudflare and Graphika reported no comparable drops in bot activity. However, Russian-language output on Telegram did see a decrease of 5% to 15%, suggesting that while Russian bots managed to restore their activity, there are variations in response across different platforms.
The information comes from an analytical report by the CCD, dated October 15, 2026, which utilized Osavul monitoring software to track 22,664 messages from 5,201 accounts across 26 topics on Ukraine's Facebook and Telegram. This analysis underscores the importance of closely monitoring disinformation dynamics in the current context.
The swift recovery of bot activity emphasizes the need for social media platforms to implement more robust measures to combat misinformation, especially in times of conflict. Users must remain critical of the information they consume and share, as misinformation can have significant consequences on public perception and opinion regarding crucial events.
