Stack Overflow Survey: Developers Embrace AI but Remain Skeptical

A new survey reveals developers use AI daily but show skepticism about its reliability.
According to Stack Overflow's latest survey, nearly a third of developers who use artificial intelligence (AI) daily spend four hours or more of their workday on these tools. This study, which gathered 30,903 responses from developers and technologists across 169 countries, highlights the increasing integration of AI into programmers' daily work.
Among the 10,926 daily AI users who answered the time-use question, about 80% reported using these tools for at least an hour a day. However, despite this intensive use, developers do not feel entirely comfortable with AI's reliability in their work decisions.
## Why it matters The skepticism from developers towards AI is significant, as it suggests that, despite the growing adoption of these technologies, there are still concerns about their ability to perform critical tasks. This could influence how these tools are developed and implemented in the future.
## What we know Only 7% of respondents fully trust AI-generated results for important decisions, while 48% only trust them when they can easily verify the information. Additionally, a high 79% of respondents consider source attribution important when evaluating AI-generated technical answers.
## What remains unclear It remains to be seen how this relationship between developers and AI will evolve in the future. The company has not detailed whether it plans to conduct further studies to explore the reasons behind this skepticism and how it might affect AI adoption in software development.
