UK SMEs are spending big on AI tools, led by Anthropic

Small and medium enterprises in the UK are significantly increasing their investment in AI tools, with Anthropic leading the charge.
Recent research indicates that about 1 in 8 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UK are investing in artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The study by Capital on Tap shows that the adoption of AI solutions in this sector has grown from 1.1% in 2023 to 12.8% by 2026, marking a significant shift towards digitalization and automation.
The publishing sector stands out as the main adopter of these technologies, indicating a clear trend towards modernizing processes. Despite typically operating with modest budgets, the research highlights that over 28% of SMEs are using two or more AI platforms, suggesting a diversified strategy to maximize the benefits of these tools.
Anthropic, with its Claude model, has emerged as the most popular AI provider among British SMEs, capturing 54.1% of total AI spending. This focus by small businesses reflects a growing confidence in AI's capabilities to enhance efficiency and productivity, even in a challenging economic environment.
The average quarterly spend per SME has reached £75.60, a figure that, while modest, represents a significant commitment to adopting emerging technologies. The competition among AI providers, such as Anthropic and OpenAI, is intensifying, which could benefit businesses by offering more choices and potentially better pricing.
This growth in AI tool adoption among SMEs could have a considerable impact on the UK business landscape, driving innovation and enhancing competitiveness in an increasingly digital market.
