Google changes Gemini subscription: limited access and higher costs

Google has notified its AI Plus subscribers about an increase in costs and restrictions on access to Pro models in the Gemini app.
Google has begun emailing its AI Plus subscribers to inform them that starting November 13, 2026, access to Pro models in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search will be restricted to Google AI Pro subscribers and above. This means that those currently on the AI Plus plan will need to consider an upgrade if they wish to continue using the platform's advanced models.
AI Plus subscribers will still have access to Google's Flash and Flash Lite models, but existing chats using Pro models will need to be continued with a different model. This change follows an earlier announcement from Google about restrictions on lower-priced subscription tiers, raising concerns among users who rely on these tools for their daily tasks.
Why it matters
This adjustment in Google's subscription tiers could impact many users who utilize advanced AI capabilities for various applications, from work to entertainment. With the price increase, users will have to assess whether the additional cost justifies the performance improvements offered by Pro models. This could lead to fragmentation in the use of AI tools, where only higher-tier subscribers can access the most advanced features.
What we know
Google AI Plus subscribers must upgrade to the Google AI Pro plan at $19.99 per month or the AI Ultra plan at $99.99 per month to maintain access to Pro models. Google has started notifying users about these changes, indicating that they are preparing for a significant transition in their pricing structure and accessibility.
What remains unclear
It has not yet been confirmed whether there will be new models or additional features exclusively offered in the higher-tier plans, nor if other measures will be implemented to compensate users who may not wish or be able to afford the subscription increase.
