Kids Outsmarting Social Media Bans: A Non-Issue?

Many countries are imposing social media bans for minors, but their effectiveness is questionable. A study reveals that a significant majority of teens manage to bypass these restrictions.
Recently, several countries have begun implementing bans on minors accessing social media, with France and Australia leading this trend. In July, France attempted to restrict access to platforms for children under 15, but the measure was blocked by its human rights court. Meanwhile, the UK plans to prohibit access to Facebook, TikTok, and other platforms for those under 16 starting in 2027, while the EU has also joined in with a similar age limit.
Why it matters
These bans reflect a growing concern about the safety and well-being of youth online. However, initial data from Australia, which enacted a ban in 2024, suggest that these measures are ineffective, as most teenagers find ways to circumvent them. This raises questions about the feasibility of such approaches and their actual impact on protecting minors.
What we know
A recent study indicates that four out of five teens under 16 manage to access the banned platforms. Young people have developed various clever tactics to bypass these restrictions, from using a sibling's ID to altering their appearance, such as drawing facial hair on themselves.
What remains unclear
It has yet to be determined whether the solution to this issue lies in enhancing enforcement of the laws or if it is necessary to rethink how young people interact with social media. Opinions are divided on the effectiveness of strict bans versus more flexible approaches that promote digital literacy.
